John Steinbeck, 58 at the time, outfitted a sort of primitive RV with all the comforts of home and set off to fulfill a lifelong dream of driving across the country. His traveling companion was a standard poodle named Charley. Along the way Steinbeck meets characters of all types and spends time with them along the highways and byways of mid-century America. While some have criticized the book for being dated, I found it to be a charming snapshot of one man’s impression of our country and its people in a different era.
