USA, Rob Marshall
Fantastic! Having seen (and loved) the Broadway revival with the original cast a few years ago, the bar had been set pretty high. I’m happy to report that my expectations were exceeded by this exciting film adaptation of the Kander and Ebb musical, including the pulse-pounding Fosse-esque choreography. The singing and dancing were great, and the staging, choreography and editing combined to keep up the excitement, almost as if watching a live performance. Director Rob Marshall made the most of the film medium, adding a layer onto the presentation that enriched, rather than depleted, the original musical. All that was lacking was the response of a live audience, applauding after each production number, which I must confess, I had to restrain myself from doing on more than one occasion. I’m already planning to see it again!
