For someone who’s all about the movies, I have never cared for the Academy Awards. This time of year, people who know me as the avid movie watcher always ask, “So, who do you think will win the Oscar this year? Huh? Huh?” And my reply is always the same:
I. Couldn’t. Care. Less.
Best Picture? Best Actress? The Academy Awards don’t represent the best of anything. The Oscars are a bloated popularity contest wrapped up in shiny industry politics.
Of course, that’s not to say I wouldn’t be there in a heartbeat to accept my Oscar for best screenplay, because that would be the one time the Academy got it right.

Very well put! I have been watching about a movie per week through Netflix over the last year, mixing it up with foreign / documentary / independent / big hollywood productions, and it’s been quite a pleasure. I never think about what the best is, just if I liked it or not, and if I can take anything from the film. I do about the same with music, never really having a singel CD that I can call the best, but 10 or 15 that spent a lot of time in my player in that year.
