The first of many authors to make their second appearance on my Recommended Reading list is J.C. Oates. Set in New York in the 1950s, the Foxfire high-school gang is filled with characters and events which avoid the stereotypes you expect to find in a book such as this. Although you know from the start that this sisterhood is doomed, you’re still willing to go along with them for the ride. As you follow the formation, rise to power and ultimate break-up of the gang, you come to know each girl and understand why they become what they become. And if you cross one of their members, watch out.
