The Shipping News

E. Annie Proulx (1993)

This simple tale about an overweight widower, with a protruding chin and a lack of self confidence, who moves with his two young daughters to their ancestral home in Newfoundland, is a very engaging novel. This Pulitzer Prize-winner is set on the icy shores of the Canadian coast, making it a perfect winter read. I enjoyed the way that Quoyle interpreted many events in his life as newspaper headlines, and how bits and pieces of the narrative were written in the clipped pattern of Northeastern speech. A quick and very entertaining read, I found myself unexpectedly laughing out loud throughout.
