Charles Dickens (1854)
Definitely not one of my favorites by this, my favorite author, but I’m glad I read it for its historical and social perspective. Centered on the theme of man / individual vs. society / civilization / Industrial Revolution. An indictment against Victorian society and the then popular philosophy of Utilitarianism.
It didn’t have the great collection of characters and humorous side stories usually associated with Dickens, but made for a very good discussion over tea at the Drake–our annual Book Club outing.
