Review: The Black Flower

Howard Bahr (1997)

This Civil War-era novel was overshadowed by Cold Mountain at the time of its release, despite receiving equally favorable, if not better, reviews. I found it to be a good read. Though the romance was a bit syrupy at times, the author captures the tone of the period, with gripping battle scenes vividly rendered. As far as first-person accounts of Civil War battle go, this book far outshines The Red Badge of Courage.
