Mildly entertaining, but kinda ho-hum. I wasn’t a big fan of the first Shrek, so it wasn’t like I was dying to be among the many who’ll surely elevate this film to another box office record. Halfway through Shrek 2, I made up my mind–I do not care for this style of animation. While I much prefer the style found in films like The Triplets of Belleville, I also have a soft spot for the Toy Story gang, but something about watching Fiona Frankenstein-walk her way around on screen just didn’t work for me. The animals and backgrounds looked great, but the Fiona, and especially the humans, made me cringe. I think it just looks weird and fake. Yeah, I know, it’s a CARTOON, but it still looked fake. And don’t even get me started on The Polar Express.
The story was okay, some of the pop references and “in” jokes were clever, but the pop songs on the soundtrack had me groaning. The cat however, with the big puppy dog eyes, was hilarious. [***]
