Here’s the formula I remember from high school: F = 1.8C + 32. You can see that when C = -40, so is F.
(When I was in the UK though, people were spitting out the equivalence in less time than I could multiply by 1.8. I asked how it was done so quickly, doubting the density of autistic-savants in the population I met, and I was told that they approximate by doubling the temperature, then adding 30. Or: F is approximately 2C + 30. Much quicker.)
