Review: I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (1932)

Excellent Depression-era prison drama about a drifter (Oscar winner Paul Muni) who’s at the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up serving years of hard labor on a brutal Southern chain gang. He escapes and makes a new life for himself in Chicago, but his past catches up to him in a surprising twist of fate.

Paul Muni, all but forgotten now, deserves to be remembered more for performances such as this. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy and based on an incredible true story.
