Review: Incident at Loch Ness (2004)

Here’s the premise: Director Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo and Grizzly Man) takes a bare bones crew to Loch Ness to shoot a documentary. They’re trailed by another film crew, shooting their own documentary. Along the way, production problems and tensions between the director and his producer strain the creative process until a strange occurrence on (and in) the Loch disrupts the film for good.

Oh, and the whole thing is a fake.

Incident is a documentary about a documentary wrapped up in a comedy. Zak Penn, the “producer,” is actually the director of this mockumentary. Werner Herzog does a great job acting…like himself and the film is quite entertaining, but overall I was a tad disappointed. Too subtle to be called an out-and-out comedy, when it did cross-over to include comic bits (the supermodel sonar operator for instance) it seemed to be stretching. And the final fish encounter I thought ridiculous. [***]
