Lemony Snicket’s latest book, The Penultimate Peril, snuck up on me. I stopped dead (heh heh) in my tracks when I passed a bookstore with a window display full of them on my way to work Friday. The cover is a festive orange, making it the perfect Halloween treat!
Snicket is a notoriously close-to-the-vest-type author, but with a title like that, we can only assume PP is the next-to-last book in the series. Ah, that would make the final installment lucky number 13. How fitting.

Assume no longer. In a recent interview with Lemony, it was made clear that this is the second to last book in the series.
I wasn’t that impressed with the story in PP, but it’s the way he tells it that’s impressive. Very funny – and clever.
