Need New Music–Stat!

The old iPod needs an infusion of fresh tunes! Every so often I get a craving for new music, a singer or group unknown to me to discover. I’ve been compiling of list of potential purchases. Help me out here. What are you listening to right now that you just can’t get enough of? That disc that’s on continuous play on the CD player in your car. Or maybe an old favorite you never get tired of.

Old, new, pop, rock, classical, folk, whatever. I’d love to hear your suggestions for my music wish list.

  1. Ágætis Byrjun (Sigur Rós) is great!
Do you have “Plans” by Death Cab for Cutie? It’s close to perfection.

  2. I have Transatlanticism which I like but they’d fallen off my radar. Thanks for the tip on Plans–I’ll add it to the list.

  3. Ok, a few more random suggestions (and let me know what you think of Low):
•Veracini Sonatas (John Holloway, Jaap ter Linden, and Lars Ulrik Mortensen) – crisp, beautiful violin music
•Getz/Gilberto (Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto, and featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim) – a staple in my parents’ house back in the earlyl
’60s, but still amazing (and perfect with a mojito!)
    • J.S. Bach Suites for Cello (Pablo Casals) – close to perfection
    • Leos Janacek: A Recollection (Andras Schiff) – ’cause you like Janacek, right? Non-plinky piano.
    • Here Be Monsters (Ed Harcourt)
    • Evolution (John Lewis) – more non-plinky piano to broaden your horizons
    • Takemitsu: “A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden; Spirit Garden; Dreamtime” (Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop) – take the plunge and see if Alex Ross at The New Yorker knows what the hell he’s talking about.
    • Hello Central (George Lewis) – New Orleans jazz clarinet from the master

  4. I’ve recently pulled out these oldies for a change from Blues and Classical–
    k.d. lang–Shadowland
    Roy Rogerd–slideways
any thing by Aretha franklin still blows me away.
