Review: Pirates of the Caribbean–At World’s End (2007)

It’s loud, it’s overblown, and it’s too long–in other words, Pirates O’ the Caribbean Part 3 is exactly what you expect from the third go around. Not as good as the first, but far better than the second, it’s worth seeing on the big screen.

When last we saw Captain Jack Sparrow, he was trapped in Davy Jones’ Locker. Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner (Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, again lacking any real chemistry) head to the end of the world to find him. Lucky for us, they have Geoffrey Rush (back as Barbossa) along with them for the ride. Rush, Johnny Depp, and a spectacular battle at sea are the best reasons to see this film. Bill Nighy is back as Davy Jones, though sorely under-used, and Chow Yun-Fat is wasted, merely a vehicle to get Knightley a seat at the Pirate Round Table, which was also an anti-climactic plot point.

Pirates 3 is a fun summer ride but it’s time for this carnival ride to be retired. Topping out at 168 minutes of dirty pirates, sloppy boats, explosions, bad teeth, cannon fire and yelling, I’ve had more than my fill of swashbuckling spectacle for a good long while. [*** out of 5]
