On Wednesday a group of us took a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan. In all my years here in Chicago, I’d never been on one of these package cruises out on the lake. Too cheesy, too expensive, lousy food. The cruise we were on was with Kanan Cruises, a newer charter outfit here in Chicago and higher end than the usual booze cruise that was so popular in college. We were guests at a special event and it was a lot of fun.
The evening began with cocktails and appetizers on deck enjoying the view dockside. The boat pulled away from Navy Pier about 6:30 and we criss-crossed back and forth inside the breakwater, as far south as the Shedd Aquarium and as far north as the Hancock Tower. When we weren’t eating (the buffet dinner was quite good), our group spent the entire time up top taking in the view. The weather wasn’t perfect (a bit on the cool and cloudy side) but the rain never materialized and the view as the lights came on was outstanding. Service on board was excellent and their choice of music playing topside (Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Nat King Cole) perfectly set the scene. The evening concluded with fireworks off Navy Pier before we puled back into the dock at ten.
If you’re looking for a classy way to see (or show off) the city, I’d highly recommend a Kanan cruise. Despite the rocking and rolling, I managed to snap a few shots that aren’t a total blur. You can see them here.
Great pictures. My nostalgia runneth over.
To think I once owned that city, and here I am in a 3 block town.
