Cold Showers

Did I mention we have no hot water? And that we’ve had no hot water since Friday? Yeah.

It began on Friday afternoon with a gas leak in the basement and a two-and-a-half hour wait for Nicor (the gas company) to respond to our “emergency” call. All I have to say is it’s a good thing no one in this household is a smoker. Turns out the culprit wasn’t the furnace, it was the water heater, so the guy shut it off and turned off the gas to the tank.

Exactly this time a year ago, we had no kitchen. I’ve decided having no hot water is worse. Each day we’ve had to schlep to a friend’s house to shower (thanks Karen!) and washing dishes is like camping out, heating water on the stove. I just spent an hour and a half washing the dishes that had accumulated in the sink and dishwasher on the hopeful notion that our problem would be quickly fixed.

Alas, no. I’ve spent the past two days home from work babysitting the water heater while a friendly repair man banged around in the basement. Long story short, it looks like we’ve got a “leaker” and the entire tank will have to be replaced. The good news is it’s under warranty. The bad news is there’s no word yet when the replacement will be installed.
