Uncommon Ground has opened a new location on Devon, a welcome addition to the Edgewater neighborhood and a big step up from Speakeasy, the restaurant that was in the space before. The menu is much more creative and quite tasty. I’ve had breakfast once and dinner twice and on all occasions everything ordered was delicious.
The bacon-wrapped meatloaf was moist and flavorful, served in a super gravy; the perfect comfort food for a frigid winter night. The pizzas for one have a delicious, flaky thin crust and are topped with fresh ingredients. On Fridays they have a fish and chips special which is some of the best I’ve had in the city. The beer batter is crispy without being greasy or, as is often the case with fish fry, soggy.
To start, I’ve tried the winter chopped salad (with beets!) which was very good and sweet potato fries served with a goat cheese fondue dip that was quickly gobbled up by our table. Desserts, including a warm apple tart, carrot cake, and gelato (the whisky flavor was my favorite) were all hits. They have an eclectic beer and wine list and a very pleasant bar area with a fireplace. There’s a stage in the back room for live music performances. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, though a bit loud when the place fills up. Prices are moderate, entrees range from $10-25 and portions are generous. Judging by the crowd that was there few Fridays ago, my friends and I aren’t the only ones who’ve found a new favorite.

My sister-in-law worked at Uncommon Ground in the earlyish 90s. I kid you not. I’ve been there; it’s definitely a cool place. Good to know they are thriving!
