Review: Blades of Glory (2007)

Will Ferrell and company almost carry off this absolutely ridiculous spoof on the world of competitive figure skating. Unfortunately, if you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen the funniest bits.

Two Olympic skaters, boy wonder Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heider) and show boating macho man Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell), are stripped of their honors and banned from competition after their mutual hatred sparks a medal ceremony shoving match that ends in a brawl. They reunite and blaze a new trail on the ice as the first ever male pairs skating duo. There’s plenty of comedy potential there to make an amusing 90-minute diversion for free on cable. My favorite bit was the slow-speed ice skating chase–on land.

Jon Heider is physically right as the sensitive, slight half of the team but he’s out of his comic league with the likes of Ferrell and the team of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler, hilarious as the rival sibling skating pair of Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg. Jenna Fischer doesn’t have much to do as their put-upon younger sister who’s sent to spy on and then seduce the male pair before their big comeback competition.

I’d give Blades of Glory 3 out of 5 Iron Lotuses.

  1. “If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen the funniest bits.” That pretty much describes every Will Ferrell movie.
