Review: A Good Scent From a Strange Mountain

Robert Olen Butler (1993)

Each story in this Pulitzer Prize-winning collection centers on Vietnamese immigrants living in Louisiana. The writing is beautiful, evocative of the exotic life in Vietnam, the immigrant experience in America, and the links of culture and memory that inform one to the other. Butler creates utterly believable characters in stories that are quietly amusing and affective.
