My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A compelling WWI-era drama set in a psychiatric institute populated with traumatized British soldiers. This book, the first of a trilogy focusing on the psychological repercussions of battle on those who serve, wends back and forth in time and alternates between different points of view. Patients grapple with the psychological consequences of witnessing the atrocities of trench warfare, driven to carry on in the face of senseless, mass killing as their doctor wrestles with his role, to set these men back to rights and make them fit for return to the front.
