We visited the New Albanian Brewing Company a couple of times during our visit to New Albany, Indiana. On the way out of town, we stopped to pick up a growler of Community Dark, which we enjoyed at home that evening after the seven hour drive. Dark in color (looking a lot like coffee) it was light and tasty, well suited for summertime drinking.

New Patio Furniture in the Rain

Brought the new patio furniture home just in time for it to begin raining again. All day Sunday, the table and four chairs taunted me as the three different times, the sky darkened like night as strong thunderstorms rolled through.

Spotty Feet

Over 200 days into my Feet First project and I'm still amazed that there are days when I completely forget to snap a shot of my feet. This past week was terrible; I missed a shot every other day.

Lincoln Logs were never my thing. It took me ten minutes to construct this "station house" only to have JD destroy it in 1.5 seconds.

One of my favorite front yards in town. All prairie grasses and flowering ground cover. I walk by it every chance I get to see how it's changed from week to week.

I tried a new Belgian beer. I'd never had anything from the Chimay brand, which I gather is still made in small batches by Trappist monks. I quite liked this one, it had just the right bitterness level for me. And I loved the pop of the cork that started off the bottle.

Cinco de Mayo doctor’s visit. The six-month followup to my final reconstructive surgery. Sitting in the exam room chair one year after this all began. The view was quite different from here.

Getting the boat from the dry dock, down the Chicago River and back into Lake Michigan for another season of high seas adventure. Luckily the rain held off until after we’d raised the mast and were nearly into the harbor.

Party prep. Did as much of the food preparation as possible the day before. My first fear was there wouldn’t be enough food for 60+ guests. My second fear was there wouldn’t be enough room to store it all. It all worked out–with two kitchens humming and four of us chopping, mixing, baking and preparing over two days.

The big day finally arrived! My one-year cancer-free anniversary party! I could think of no better cause for celebration and wanted to give back to everyone who’d helped me in one way or another to get through the past year. A good way to give back the positive energy that I’d been the grateful recipient of last year.

Everyone brought a craft beer to share and we had a big beer tasting that went on for hours. The photo above was taken very early in the evening. By the end, we had three beer buckets overflowing with a varied and impressive array of beer.

I wanted to make sure everyone was well fed for the tasting and I tried a bunch of new recipes, including a brie and arugula sandwich with apple mustard, lentils on crostini, stuffed dates, spiced almonds, and stuffed cucumbers. Had the old standby favorite veggie pizza and for dessert, peanut butter cookies, bourbon glazed shortbread and a killer chocolate caramel pretzel bar made by a friend who’s a pastry chef. The evening was a success on all counts and it was great fun to see everyone in one place, together. A tad bit surreal, actually and unfortunately, over much too soon.

Early April Feet

I served as election judge in the most recent election. My role, as usual, was as equipment manager, which means I was in charge of all the machinery/technology that goes into setting up, maintaining, and trouble-shooting the voting machines (paper and touchscreen) during the election.

The day before, I met with my fellow judges to set-up our polling place. Everything we need is contained in a large, metal box on wheels. The perfect combination of old school and high tech.

Election day is an early (up at 4:30 a.m.) and long (16-hour-long) day, but I enjoy the work and the people. It's a worthwhile and interesting job, punctuated with long periods of not much to do. This election in particular was excruciatingly slow. School board elections don't tend to bring out the voters. I worked in a new polling place with a lot of very nice people who worked very well together. And, the majority of them were readers, so there were period of the day where the room felt more like a library than a polling place. Ideal.
