Review: The Wedding Date (2006)

Debra Messing doesn’t do much to distance herself from her Will & Grace character in this mediocre romance. In a reverse Pretty Woman storyline, Kat Ellis (Grace Adler, er, I mean Messing) is so freaked out about attending her sister’s wedding solo that she hires a gigolo (Dermot Mulroney) to pose as her date. Bonus points for making her ex-fiance, and best man in the wedding party, jealous.

The plot is totally by the books and hardly classifies as a comedy since there’s nary a laugh all the way through. It’s also not much of a romance; the chemistry between Messing and Mulroney is tepid and there’s a glum mood overhanging the entire affair. Finally, I have no idea why it’s set in England, since the filmmakers take little advantage of the location. [* out of 5]
