Gone for Good

Mark Childress
(1998)

I was disappointed by this book, by the same author as Crazy in Alabama which I really enjoyed. This is a silly story about a semi-famous rock star whose plane crash lands on an island inhabited by other famous, and presumably dead, people (Amelia Earhart, Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Hoffa.) The main character was none too interesting and the plot culmination in a war of the natives (and the monkeys!) against the millionaire who’s taking over the island for his evil plan (Howard Hughes, of course) was just dumb. Judging from the books I’ve read by this author which precede and follow Crazy, I’d say, for me at least, this guy has peaked.
