The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
My rating: 1 of 5 stars
80 pages in and I’m bailing on J.K. Rowling’s first foray into adult fiction. I’m not enjoying it in the least and there are far too many other books whispering my name. I understand from others I’ve talked to that this is a character-driven story (and indeed, the plot isn’t intrinsicly interesting to me nor did the book hook me in the reading of it) but the characters aren’t grabbing me either. That leaves the prose. I’m willing to stick with a book if the writing carries me along. This doesn’t. So, I’m going to stop forcing myself to read this and move on to the other 500 books I want to read.
I, too, had to put this book down. There were far too many books in my to-read pile to continue with this slog. I wrote about it as well, if you are interested: http://acidfreepulp.com/2012/12/08/the-casual-vacancy-conundrum/
Noooooo!!!!! It took me a while to get into this, but it gathered a lot of momentum when I did.
Acid Free Pulp: Thanks for your link. Interesting to read a similar take to my own.
Siobhan: Ha ha. Well, I think I’ll wait for the mini-series version–A much smaller time investment. 🙂
