Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is a fascinating, disturbing, hilarious, vile, and nearly unbelievable account of Scientology’s past and present. Author Lawrence Wright goes to great effort to present a balanced account of L. Ron Hubbard’s life, the genesis of his religion (or cult, depending on your point of view), and the mythology and doctrine of Scientology. I’ve long been fascinated by the allure of Scientology and its infamous ties to Hollywood. Everything is explained here, in sometimes shocking detail. Wright’s book, the product of exhaustive research and hundreds of personal interviews, reveals a much more sinister under layer to Scientology than I ever imagined. Intriguing and chilling reading.
